A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is a government-approved plan through which you save money for your retirement years.
The benefit of making a RRSP contribution is you can deduct a portion of the contribution off of your taxes. When you do this it saves you on your tax bill by reducing your taxable income. Another bonus is the money you contribute to your RRSP is invested and grows each year tax free! This makes it a great tool for building your retirement nest egg.
A Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) is a way for individuals to set money aside tax-free throughout their lifetime.
Unlike an RRSP, contributions to a TFSA are not deductible for income tax purposes. However any amount contributed as well as any income earned in the account (for example, investment income and capital gains) is generally tax-free, even when it is withdrawn. Each year there is a limit of how much an individual can contribute to a TFSA, for 2023 the limit is $6500.
